Featuring a standard Quattro all wheel drive and 32 valve dual over head cam V8 engine with either a five speed manual or four speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, the Audi V8 had all the power it needed to run great. The 3.6-liter powerplant was basically two four cylinder engines which were coupled at the crankshaft to form a V8 engine, and the power that this supplied received much attention. The V8 sported a unique grill design and extended wheelbase that set it apart from the 100 and 200 models. Pronounced wheel arches and larger wheels gave the V8 a more distinguished look than its BMW and Mercedes-Benz competitors.
In 1990 and 1991 Audi introduced a long wheelbase version of the V8 as well as introducing a 4.2-liter powerplant that provided plenty of horsepower and torque to get just about any job done. Audi offered an optional automatic transmission during this time as well. The long wheelbase did just as well as the shorter wheelbase had done with consumers.
The V8 is well known in the racing world as well as the passenger vehicle world. In 1990 Audi developed a Group A competition version of the vehicle and promptly began racing with it. Eventually Audi would have two teams entered into the German Touring car Championship both of which did well until 1992 when the organizers of the race deemed the V8's crankshaft as an illegal modification. After that time, Audi retired from the championship, but not before the V8 was made very well known for its racing capabilities.
