A second generation of Audi's A6, the Audi RS6 is a high performance vehicle that was available in both a sedan and an Avant station wagon. The only Audi vehicle that exceeded the RS6 in power and in price was the RS6 Plus. The RS6 would replace both the S6 4.2 and the S6 Plus. The RS6 was powered by a twin turbocharged 4.2 liter V8 engine that provided a respectable 444 horsepower and 415 of torque. Audi combined the V8 engine with the turbochargers to give the RS6 a wide power band with the peak torque available from 1950 to 5600 rotations per minute.

The Audi RS6 was standard with Quattro all wheel drive system and a five speed tiptronic transmission. This was the first vehicle that Audi equipped with its Dynamic Ride Control system that used a pump to keep pressure in shock absorbers during cornering to counteract rolling and pitching. The RS6 can accelerate from 0-60 in just 4.4 seconds and 0-100 in just 10.7 seconds. The top speed is electronically governed at 155 miles per hour. The RS6 Plus version of the vehicle was capable of providing 480 horsepower and could reach a maximum speed of 180 miles per hour. This higher performance version of the RS6 was only sold in European markets for just one year where it sold out completely in very little time. A new generation of the RS6 as well as the S6 will be introduced for the 2006 model year.

While there are not a lot of RS6 owners, those that originally purchased the vehicle report that it performs very well and is quite easy to handle. Audi intends to replicate this satisfaction with the updated versions for the 2006 model year.
