In 1995 the A4 received a facelift for its second generation. The A4 was now powered with a 2.4 liter 30-valve V6 with replaced the outdated 2.6-liter V6 that had been used in the first generation models. A turbo charged model was also available as well as standard Quattro and a six-speed gearbox. The overall feel of the A4 changed with the changing of taillights, headlights, door handles, as well as other more modern cosmetic features. For the third generation the A4 was based on the B6 platform and would sell from the years of 2000-2005. All of the engine options were changed with either displacement increases or power upgrades. Two turbo engines were now available as well. Audi also introduced the popular continuously variable transmission during this generation, which replaced the Tiptronic on all front wheel drive units. The third generation began in the 2005 model year and continues until the present. The A4 was now based in the B7 platform, which is not shared with any other vehicles. This is the generation that would introduce Fuel Stratified Injection on the 2.0 TSFI and 3.2 V6 FSI. Audi also dropped the five-valve configuration it had been using for the better-known four valves per cylinder configuration. The A4 continues to be a very popular car in all markets because of its good looks and great drivability. |
